Peace Buzz makes stopover in PRRD hometown

DAVAO CITY — Dabawenyos from all walks of life flocked to the iconic Rizal Park here to welcome the arrival of the Peace Buzz in this southern Mindanao city, the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Spearheaded by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), the Peace Buzz is a peace caravan that aims to promote the culture of peace, understanding and unity across the country.

In his remarks during a press conference, Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus G. Dureza explained that various community-initiated activities will be conducted in areas where the Peace Buzz is scheduled to make a stop.

“This shows that the locality itself, the public and private sector, are as interested as the [national] government in the work for peace,’ Sec. Dureza said.

“This work for peace should not be exclusively a responsibility of government but more so, the responsibility of the private sector,” he added.

In order for genuine economic development to take root, Sec. Dureza emphasized the need to make people feel that the government is taking care of them.

“A lot of the alienation of the sectors [occur] where we have a lot of conflict, where many of them feel that they have been abandoned by government and they have not benefitted from it,” he pointed out.

To address this concern, the presidential peace adviser underscored the need to “reach out to those people who feel that that they have been excluded” from the mainstream of development.

“They must be there for inclusivity in our work for peace,” he said.

Sec. Dureza also called on members of the private sector, particularly civil society groups such as the Rotary and Lions Club not to limit their assistance to their respective communities but also to “go out to the hinterlands where the people badly need our attention.”

“There are many ways of doing peace such as improving the lives of people on the ground [and] providing them with the support that they need so badly and have been deprived from them,” he said.

The Peace Buzz kicked off its journey in Baguio City on Sept 21 and has made stops in the cities Quezon, Legazpi, Catbalogan, Surigao, and Butuan.

Its nine-day trip will culminate in Iligan City on Oct 1.

Over the years, OPAPP has been leading the nationwide celebration of the Month of Peace and has been working closely with members of civil society to bring the message of peace among the various sectors of the community, especially in conflict affected areas in Mindanao.

The theme of this year’s Peace Month celebration is “Puso Para sa Kapayapaan, Magkaisa Para sa Bayan.” ###

Ngayon, binibigyan natin sila ng puwang at binibigyan talaga natin sila ng all possible opportunities to participate in the peace process,” Andot shared.

(We have a peace table for the IPs alone and this is a very good development because, whereas in the past, this sector is not much heard. Now they are given a venue, and all possible opportunities to participate in the peace process.)

Simultaneously, activities were held in Caraga’s regional center, including the Communicator’s Peace forum on Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL).

The Peace Buzz is a caravan that will travel nationwide to showcase and highlight the peacebuilding efforts of the government and provide updates on developments in the peace process. The Peace Buzz will drop by key cities to engage and collaborate more with different stakeholders.

OPAPP, Sorsogon, give green light to seven new PAMANA projects

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Provincial Local Government Unit of Sorsogon yesterday that will bring seven livelihood projects through the PAyapa at MAsaganang PamayaNAn (PAMANA) program to the province.

The MOA, signed by Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza and Sorsogon Governor Robert Lee Rodrigueza during National Peace Consciousness Month festivities in the province will enable both OPAPP and the local government to facilitate the implementation of projects that will benefit 14 municipalities for this year.

Rehabilitation and development of irrigation facilities; 3.) Duck raising; 4.) Organic ducks and native chicken production; 5.) Climate resilient Coco-based production; 6.) In his speech during the turn-over of the completed PAMANA Tramline in Brgy. Cawayan in Irosin, Sec. “If there is a problem on security, there will always be uncertainty in development,” the Secretary Dureza said. “What is the use of our projects if we failed to provide an enabling environment for peace?”

The secretary also reiterated the need for the public to trust the government and support the security sector in battling insurgency in the province.

“You need to help our soldiers and the police not by arming yourselves but by giving them vital information. We need you to rally behind the government,” he said.

Peace month 2017 to highlight compassion, unity among Filipinos

Puso para sa Kapayapaan, Magkaisa para sa Bayan,” is the theme for this year’s celebration of National Peace Consciousness Month. Rather than just talk about change, the theme reflects the positive change we want our country to achieve.

The theme also reminds us to put a little more understanding and respect to one another so that despite our many differences, having a diverse culture can be the strength of our country.

In his message for the Peace Month, Deputy Peace Adviser Undersecretary Nabil Tan also encouraged the Filipino people to be active participants to the peace process and be advocates of peace, “Let us find ways in which we can contribute to the ongoing peace process and become catalysts of peace, unity and understanding in our respective communities.”

“I believe that all of us can be peace builders. Let us start now,” he added.

OPAPP Undersecretary Diosita T. Andot also called on the Filipino people to unite so we can withstand the challenges our country experiences, “Nowadays, we say PUSO when we are passionate about something, expressing our strong feelings and emotions in an ardent way. As we celebrate the National Peace Consciousness Month this September, our PUSO for peace should be highlighted, as we reflect on our gains to promote social healing and peacebuilding on our nation.

We would like to invite everyone to unite for our common goal in withstanding the challenges our country faces and ensuring a just and lasting peace to all Filipinos. PUSO PARA SA KAPAYAPAAN, MAGKAISA PARA SA BAYAN.”

Pursuant to the thrust of the government to instill greater consciousness and understanding among the Filipino people on the comprehensive peace process and to sustain institutional and popular support for participation in the promotion of building a culture of peace, the month of September was declared as the “National Peace Consciousness Month” by virtue of Proclamation No. 675 dated July 2004.

The same Proclamation mandates the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) to be the lead government agency to coordinate and monitor the observance of the National Peace Consciousness Month.

OPAPP, together with national and local government agencies, will be conducting nationwide peace and development related events and activities. To formally launch the Peace Month, OPAPP will simultaneously celebrate Eid’l Adha on 1 September within 4 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps situated in Iligan City.

This year’s Peace Month highlight is the “Peace Buzz”. It is a peace caravan that will roam nationwide to bring the government’s peace initiatives on the ground. The Peace Buzz will kick off in Baguio City, and will make stops in Quezon City, Legazpi City, Catbalogan City, Butuan City, Davao City, Iligan City. It will conclude its journey in Marawi City, in time for the Closing Ceremony of the Peace Month.

Aside from the Peace Buzz, OPAPP will also conduct series of fora that aims to educate different stakeholders about the peace process. Other Peace Month activities include contests that target the youth such filmmaking, photography, and spoken word competition. ###
